Budapest is the capital of Hungary, located in the northern part of the
country on both banks of the Danube River. With a population of 2 million
Budapest is by far the largest city in Hungary. The picturesque location of
the city, on two sides of the Danube, the nine connecting bridges and the
villa's and public buildings make it a lively city that has long been a heaven
for writers, artists and musicians, often referred as the Paris of the east.
Budapest is composed of two cities: Buda and Pest. The small Buda, on the
west side of the Danube river is the older part of the city with cobbled
streets and medieval buildings, looking over the much larger Pest on the opposite
side of the river, which is the commercial centre. Key attractions of the
city include the Parliament building
on the banks of the Danube, the Hungarian National Gallery, the Budapest
History Museum,
Matthias Church and the Hungarian State Opera House.
